Five minutes before midnight
For nights when you must teach yourself to stop.
Five minutes. No more. That is the whole ritual.
Put your phone in another room. Literally another room. Turn off the overhead light and leave only the candle — amber is lower than electricity, the brain recognises this.
Breathe in for four. Hold for seven. Out for eight. Three times. No more, otherwise you start counting instead of breathing.
The candle does not need to go out. It is large enough to fall asleep before it decides itself. That is one of its talents.
