A candle for relaxation

Scent is the fastest sense to memory and to calm. Lighting a candle is a small signal to yourself that the day is over. Here is which scents settle you and how to turn it into an evening ritual.

Which scents bring calm

Warm, soft scents work best for relaxation: woody tones like sandalwood and cedar, amber, and creamy gourmand accents. They feel enveloping rather than alert. Bright, fresh citrus scents are more energising and suit the daytime better.

Make it a ritual

Pick a fixed moment — after dinner, before reading, an hour before sleep. Dim the lights, put your phone away and light the candle. Doing it the same way each evening lets the scent itself become the signal to unwind.

Safe and gentle

Place the candle on a heat-resistant surface, away from draughts and with nothing flammable above it. Do not burn it for more than about four hours and put it out before you fall asleep. Our candles are hand-poured in small batches in the Netherlands.

Frequently asked

Which scent is the most calming?
Warm woody and amber scents — think sandalwood, cedar and amber — are most often felt as calming, because they are soft and enveloping rather than sharp.
Can I keep a candle lit while I sleep?
No. Put out any candle before you fall asleep or leave the room, and do not burn it for more than about four hours at a time.
